If you’ve spent any time in the world of competitive fastpitch, you’ve likely heard the daunting statistic: “Only 6.5% of high school softball players go on to play in college.”

At first glance, that number feels like a closed door. It suggests that the odds are stacked against you from the start. But if you’re a serious player (or the parent of one), there is a much bigger story behind that percentage. 

Defining The “Elite Pool”

That 6.5% statistic includes every student on a high school team, regardless of playing time or if they ever stepped foot on the field, outside of practice. It counts those playing for fun, stopping after graduation, or just boosting college applications.

In this world, the odds don’t just shift, they skyrocket!

For the 12U and 14U players already training with the intensity of a college athlete, the separation has already begun. You’ve moved past the casual phase and stepped into the deep end of the recruiting world.

By choosing additional private coaching, maintaining a rigorous training schedule, and competing in high-profile tournaments and showcases, you’ve already done the hard work of separating yourself from the pack.

Three Questions That Will Determine Your Future

Once you’ve reached this level, the “odds” matter less than your daily choices. To finish the journey and land a spot on a college roster,  ask yourself:

  1. Will you keep developing? Talent gets you noticed, but a continuous upward trajectory is what gets you signed. Coaches recruit based on your future potential under their direction.
  2. Are you in the right environment? Success isn’t just about stats. It’s about your mindset, your grades, your health, and the people you surround yourself with.
  3. Will you keep going when others stop? The “grind” is real. The players who make it are the ones who stay focused when the initial excitement wears off and welcome the sacrifices they know they will have to make.
